EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

The award-winning documentary feature film that follows the Chiu family on a surprising journey through Mississippi in search of their lost family history. Along the way, they meet a diverse group of local residents and historians, who shed light on the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South. Their emotional journey also leads them to discover how exclusionary immigration laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 impacted their family and they learn how deep their roots run in America.

Multigenerational virtual book discussion with Shirley Ann Higuchi, JD, author of "Setsuko’s Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration," and Salt Lake City community leaders Dr. Jeanette Misaka and Floyd Mori, who are featured in the book. They discuss the book, the history of Japanese Americans in Salt Lake City, and the relevance today.

The Vail Preservation Society filmed a segment for their "Voices of Vail" video series with the grandson of a Southern Pacific Chinese railroad worker. The video will be released on YouTube in the next few months.
