Stories Beyond Borders: A Chinese American and Diasporic Reading List

Created to commemorate the Chinese American Librarians Association’s 50th Anniversary, Stories Beyond Borders features children’s, middle grade, and young adult books centering Chinese American and diasporic voices. Rooted in different parts of the world, these empowering stories transcend borders and reflect the multifaceted experiences of our communities, leading us toward a brighter future full of hope, harmony, and unchecked possibilities. Dive in!

This celebratory reading list is formed through a collaboration between the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) in consultation with the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). The CALA/YALSA Taskforce members are Crystal Chen, Melody Leung, Jen Woo, Cathy Andronik, Christy Lau, Susen Shi, and Amy Chow. Books are selected based on their authenticity, accuracy, appeal, and creativity. Recent publications between 2020–2022 are prioritized due to their relevance. Some older books are included due to their historical influence and continued significance to Chinese American youth literature.

We know the stories and achievements of our communities often go untold, and this media feature aims to change this.

In the toolkit, we've listed short biographies of these figures' life work, resources to learn more, and graphics to accompany social media posts.

IMMIGRANT HISTORY INITIATIVE

ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

The award-winning documentary feature film that follows the Chiu family on a surprising journey through Mississippi in search of their lost family history. Along the way, they meet a diverse group of local residents and historians, who shed light on the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South. Their emotional journey also leads them to discover how exclusionary immigration laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 impacted their family and they learn how deep their roots run in America.

Multigenerational virtual book discussion with Shirley Ann Higuchi, JD, author of "Setsuko’s Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration," and Salt Lake City community leaders Dr. Jeanette Misaka and Floyd Mori, who are featured in the book. They discuss the book, the history of Japanese Americans in Salt Lake City, and the relevance today.

The Vail Preservation Society filmed a segment for their "Voices of Vail" video series with the grandson of a Southern Pacific Chinese railroad worker. The video will be released on YouTube in the next few months.

Culture Colonized | AAPI Hate Crimes in History: They're Not New

In this webinar series, the illegal and unjust annexation of Hawai'i of 1898 is discussed. The timeline goes into life in Hawai'i before colonization and the chain of events that led up to its wrongful entrance to the Union as a state. The discussion also goes into conversation with our speakers, Alika Bourgette (University of Washington PhD candidate), Katrina Punzalan (University of Washington alumni and former Director of the ASUW Pacific Islander Student Commission), and Lydia Faitalia (Washington State CAPAA Commissioner) about the Native Hawaiian-Pacific Islander experience and how this colonization, militarization, and imperialism still exists today.
